    Fun Facts About Hingham, Massachusetts

Hingham is a lovely town that sits in the north of Plymouth County. Its population is a little over 22 thousand. Hingham gets its name from a town in England by the same name, and is mostly famous for where it’s located on Boston Harbor as well as its colonial history.

Like many town of the South Shore, Hingham has a rich history going all the way back to 1633 when it was founded by English colonists. For the first two years it was called “Bear Cove,” until they changed the name to Hingham in 1635. Abraham Lincoln’s first American ancestor, Samuel Lincoln, was said to have come through Hingham from England in 1637. This is one of the reasons why there is a statue of Abraham Lincoln in a downtown area right next to Hingham Square.

Surrounding Hingham are the towns of Weymouth to the west, Norwell and Rockland to the south, Cohasset and Scituate to the east, and to the north lies Hull, Hingham Bay and the ocean. Hingham sits just 14 miles out of downtown Boston. The Weir River runs between Hingham and Hull on its way to the Straits Pond, separating the two towns. Weymouth River flows past the north of Hingham, serving as a kind of northern border and flowing into Hingham Bay. There are also several parks and forests in Hingham, including Wompatuck State Park, the largest of the parks which is also part of other neighboring towns like Norwell, Scituate and Cohasset.

There are also a number of notable people who come from or spent a significant amount of time in Hingham, such as Olympic Alpine Skier Alice Merryweather, President George Bush Sr.’s brother Prescott Bush Jr., four-time champion in tennis doubles at the U.S. Open, and 19th century baseball hall of famer Mike “King” Kelly.

Like most of Massachusets, Hingham has plenty of great schools. It’s home to seven public schools; Hingham High School, South Shore Educational Collaborative, Hingham Middle School, East Elementary School, Foster Elementary School, Plymouth River Elementary School and South Elementary School. There are also five private schools; Derby Academy, Notre Dame Academy, St. Paul School, Old Colony Montessori School and Su Escuela Language Academy.
