    Fun Facts About Brockton, Massachusetts

Brockton is one of the larger cities in Massachusetts, with a population of almost 100,000 residents. It’s the seventh largest city in the state. Brockton gets a lot of wind, and has been categorized as the second windiest city in the entire U.S., after Dodge City, Kansas.

Brockton has been called the “City of Champions” since two very successful boxers—Marvin Hagler and Rocky Marciano—come from there. Brockton High School also has a very successful sports program, contributing to the town’s athletic reputation.

Although rich in history, Brockton is not quite as old as some other towns on the South Shore, going back to 1821 when it was founded under the name Bridgewater. It got the name Brockton over half a century later, named after General Isaac Brock who was actually a British general who defeated American troops that were invading the town while it was under the British in 1812. Later on, during the course of the American Civil War, Brockton was the number 1 producer of shoes in America and continued to have a big industry for shoes and leather products until the end of the 20th century.

Brockton is also a city of firsts and records. In 1883, thanks to Thomas Edison, Brockton was the first place in the whole world that had a three-wire electrical system completely underground. The City Theater, which opened about 10 years later, was the first theater in the world to incorporate this electrical system and in 1884 they opened the first electrically operated fire station in the U.S. Brockton also set the world record for the most wearers of Santa Hats at one time in one place, with almost 1,800 people taking part on November 20, 2011.

Brockton has three excellent hospitals; Brockton Veterans Administration Hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, and Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. Some of these hospitals also serve as teaching facilities for resident medical students.

Brockton has fantastic transportation, with six highways passing through, its own bus service (BAT), and a train that passes through.
