The town of Braintree is officially a New England city in Norfolk county and suburb in the greater Boston area. Even though it’s officially considered a town, Massachusetts law states that it’s counted as a city.

Braintree goes all the way back to 1640 when it was founded. It gets its name from Braintree, Essex in England. Braintree used to include Quincy, Randolph and Holbrook until they broke off in the late 1700’s and 1800’s. Before the forming of Norfolk County it used to be part of Suffolk County.

A lot of prominent figures of American history were born in Braintree, including statesman John Hancock, Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, Abigail Adams, and General Sylvanus Thayer, who served early on as United States Military Academy superintendent at West Point, New York.

In the 1920s Braintree population increased by over 50%. In the same decade, Braintree served as the site of the infamous murders leading to the Sacco and Vanzetti trial.

Surrounding Braintree are the towns of Holbrook to the south, Quincy to the north, Weymouth to the east, and Randolph to the west with the Cochato River flowing between them.

The total area of Braintree is about 14.5 square miles, with a little over 4 percent of that area being water. There are 3 beautiful parks in Braintree called Sunset Lake, Blue Hills Reservation, and Pond Meadow Park.

Like most New England towns, Braintree is big on education and is home to a bunch of excellent public schools, including the Braintree High School, South Middle School, East Middle School, and the Flaherty, Highlands, Hollis, Liberty, Morrison, and Ross Elementary Schools. There are also a number of high end private schools, such as Thayer Academy and Archbishop Williams High School.

There are several points of interest that are worth showing off to visitors or tourists, including the birthplace of General Sylvanus Thayer, Monatiquot River and South Shore Plaza.

Other notable people with roots in Braintree include reporter and sports director Joe Amorosino and Priscilla Chan, wife to Mark Zuckerberg.
