    Fun Facts About Dedham, Massachusetts

Dedham is a New England town in Norfolk County, in the state of Massachusetts. It’s also the county seat of Norfolk County. It’s a quaint town, with a population just shy of 25,000. Located on the southwest border of Boston, it’s surrounded by other towns in every direction, with Needham to the northwest, Westwood to the southwest, and Canton to the southeast.

Despite being such a small town, it’s a rather old town with a rich history that goes all the way back to 1635. When it was originally settled by people from Watertown and Roxbury they wanted to call the town “Contentment.” But the General Court of Massachusetts overruled them and decided that the town should be named Dedham after a town in Essex, England by the same name due to several of the original inhabitants of the town being from there originally. During this time, the town’s borders reached all the way to the border of Rhode Island.

On August 15, 1636, the first public meeting took place. At this meeting the town covenant was signed by 18 men, stating that they would strive to run the town in accordance to God’s rules and work actively to resolve any conflicts between themselves peacefully and fairly with all members of the town looking out for each other’s benefit.

During John Adams’ presidency there was an interesting and noteworthy protest against the federal government led by David Brown which was carried out in the fashion on the American Revolution. A liberty pole was set up with the words “No Stamp Act, No Sedition Act, No Alien Bills, No Land Tax, downfall to the Tyrants of America; peace and retirement to the President; Long Live the Vice President,” the Vice president at the time being Thomas Jefferson.

There are a number of neighborhoods in Dedham, including Oakdale (the geographical center of town), Riverdale (an island surrounded by Long Ditch and the Charles River), Greenlodge, The Manor, East Dedham, Precinct One (also known as Upper Dedham), Ashcroft, and Fairbanks.

The Dedham crest bears the famous Old Avery Oak.
